JPN: Kuroshio Market (黒潮市場)

The best orange juice I've ever had in my life!

Located on the man-made island of Wakayama Marina City, Kuroshio Market is a bustling seaside seafood market featuring an array of freshly caught treasures from the sea. There's a food court with a few stalls at the market from which my family and I got our lunch. Despite the absence of English menu, there are images for the dishes at each stall.

Seven Colour Seafood Rice Bowl ¥2,350 (~S$21.30)
Taste: 8/10

This rice bowl was bought from a stall called Hamadon Shokudo (浜丼食堂). The Japanese writing on the menu is 海鮮七色丼. I'll leave it to you to figure out the colours. The assortment of seafood carefully arranged on top of Japanese rice was fresh enough, though I've definitely had fresher ones at places such as Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. Amidst the ensemble, the prawn stood out because of its divine sweetness and bouncy texture.

Kuroshio Premium Tempura Rice Bowl ¥1,680 (~S$15.20)
Taste: 7.5/10

This rice bowl was bought from a stall called Akebono (あけぼの). The Japanese writing on the menu is 黒潮プレミアム天丼. Again, it wasn't the best in its category, but the medley of fried delights atop Japanese rice was adequately crispy for my liking. Having said that, I felt that the sauce could be thicker and more flavourful.

Tuna Ramen ¥880 (~S$7.95)
Taste: 7.5/10

This soupy noodle dish was also bought from Akebono (あけぼの). The Japanese writing on the menu is 黒潮鴨まぐろラーメン. A specialty of the stall, the Wakayama style ramen in pork bone broth that was seasoned with soy sauce and oil wasn't too shabby. It came with fried tuna cakes, tuna flakes, a slice of fish cake and chopped spring onions.

Arida Orange Juice ¥500 (~S$4.55)
Taste: 9.5/10

This drink was bought from the drinks stall called Misakiya (岬屋). The Japanese writing on the menu is 有田みかんジュース. The Arida region of Wakayama Prefecture produces some of the nation's finest mandarin oranges. Surely that was the priciest cup of orange juice that I've ever paid, but boy, it was truly unparalleled. The aroma and sweetness of the fruit was just indescribable, leaving an indelible impression and making the expense truly justified. Pika's advice: They recommend their special umeshu (Japanese plum wine). You may want to give it a try.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Don't miss the tuna-filleting show at the market.
