MAS: Malaysia Airlines MH53 (Economy)

Lovely 'ayam kalio' for brunch!

We've finally come to the last post regarding my family trip to the Kansai region of Japan. We boarded Malaysia Airlines MH53 from Osaka, Japan to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and subsequently connecting to Singapore. For the 7-hour flight in Economy Class, we were treated to brunch and refreshment.

MH Meal #1

Tuna Salad - Taste: 6/10

While it might not boast extravagant flavours, the appetiser comprising canned tuna, French beans, tomato slices and potato cubes drizzled with citrusy dressing were acceptable.

Ayam Kalio with Rice - Taste: 8/10

For the Southeast Asian main course, ayam kalio (Indonesian dish of chicken in spiced coconut gravy) was served, which tantalised my taste buds as it was pretty rich and adequately spicy. I also appreciated the fact that the accompanying vegetables weren't soggy.

Saba Teriyaki with Rice Taste: 7/10

The Japanese main course, on the other hand, featured the typical mackerel slathered in sweet sauce. It was complemented by tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette roll), broccoli and carrot. It was nice to see some black sesame seeds as a thoughtful touch to the rice.

Fresh Fruits

A slice each of apple, pineapple and kiwi was served as dessert (or starter, if you wish).

Bread

The bread roll was pretty fluffy, better than the one served onboard MH52.

Beverages

The tray came with a small cup of mineral water. I had red wine, which was rather acidic, while my mother who was sitting next to me had orange juice.

MH Meal #2

Vanilla Muffin - Taste: 6.5/10

The pre-packed muffin was fluffy enough for my liking without being too sweet.

Ice Cream

Essel Super Cup by Meiji was given to each passenger. Vanilla was the only flavour available.

Beverages

The standard apple juice was my choice.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

Malaysia Airlines has fully resumed its in-flight service offerings across all sectors following the catering transition that took effect on 1 September 2023. Pika's advice: The airline does serve alcoholic beverages, including during Ramadan. In Economy Class, you can request for wine, beer and spirit, such as Bacardi Superior Rum and Hendrick's Gin.
