PHI: Rico's Lechon [Delivery]
Reunited with 'lechon' after many years!
I was too tired to venture out for dinner, but there was one Filipino specialty I was determined to have before flying back to Singapore. That's the iconic roasted suckling pig known as lechon. Thanks to GrabFood, I managed to get some from Rico's Lechon delivered to the hotel I was staying at near Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Rico's Lechon was founded in Cebu in 1995. The nearest branch from the airport is located at Blue Bay Walk.
Regular Lechon (250 g) PHP 450.00 (~S$9.15)
Taste: 8/10
First of all, I must say that the crackling skin was still awesome even after delivery, retaining most of its crispiness. The meat, which was marinated with Rico's signature blend of garlic and lemongrass, was flavourful, though not the juiciest I've had. It came with a small packet of tangy spiced vinegar that cut through the richness of the pork.
Monggos PHP 260.00 (~S$5.30)
Taste: 7/10
It was my virgin experience with savoury mung bean soup, having been accustomed to having only the sweet version all these years. Although probably not something I'd get used to, it wasn't bad at all. The soup had a rather thick, grainy consistency with aromas of earthy mung beans, garlic and onions. Bits of pork added a salty kick to it.
Garlic Rice PHP 65.00 (~S$1.30)
Taste: 8/10
The first thing that caught my eye was the generous amount of garlic scattered throughout the rice. The golden-brown fried garlic bits were nicely caramelised, lending the rice a lovely aroma. Despite being delivered to the hotel, the rice remained fluffy rather than clumping into a dense block, with each grain coated in fragrant garlic oil.

Where can you find the best lechon in Manila? Pika's advice: If you like it hot, you may want to try Rico's Spicy Lechon as the brand is known for pioneering a spicy version that makes use of bird's eye chilis.
