CUR: Zambezi Restaurant

A slice of Africa in Curaçao~

My BFF and I had the opportunity to visit Curaçao Ostrich Farm, which is one of the biggest of such farms outside of Africa. At the end of the tour, we had lunch at the on-site restaurant named after one of the longest river in Africa. Have you ever had ostrich meat before?

That was essentially my virgin experience with ostrich egg and meat.

Pastechi (Beef) US$3.00 (~S$4.10)
Taste: 9/10

A Caribbean pastry that looks similar to a curry puff at home, albeit much bigger in size, the restaurant's pastechi comes in three fillings: cheese, chicken or beef. I wasn't expecting much from it, but I was sold the moment I sank my teeth into the light and flaky pastry. Also, the minced beef was so flavourful and juicy.

Farmer's Omelette US$17.00 (~S$23.30)
Taste: 5/10

The omelette, made of ostrich egg studded with smoked ostrich meat, onions and cucumber slices, was actually really fluffy. However, there was an underlying issue with it, where the bottom layer was burnt till it became bitter (pun intended). I had no choice but to scrape it off.

Ostrich Burger US$17.00 (~S$23.30)
Taste: 7/10

Thankfully, the patty made of ostrich meat was only slightly burnt without tasting bitter. The healthy meat was quite tender and didn't taste gamey at all. The accompanying fries were lightly salted and delightfully crispy. Mayonnaise was provided in a small saucer.

Apple Pie US$6.80 (~S$9.30)
Taste: 5/10

I was so sad when I was told that the South African Milk Pie wasn't available that afternoon. In place of that, I ordered a slice of apple pie that wasn't inspiring. Served at room temperature, the crust was rather hard. Besides that, the filling didn't really have that sweet and sour balance I was looking for.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

The awesome pastechi was the saving grace indeed. Pika's advice: The restaurant is only open for dinner on Fridays in conjunction with its African Night Special Tour. There are interesting African dishes offered, such as Cape Malay Lamb Curry priced at US$24.00 (~S$32.85) and Senegalese Poulet Yassa Stew priced at US$21.00 (~S$28.75).
