SIN: Pepper Lunch
Hamburg steak has become smaller?
I used to frequent Pepper Lunch during my secondary school days. After a long period of hiatus, I decided to give it another go, patronising the relatively new branch at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard. Do you know that the logo is shaped in the form of a palette to symbolise the dream of its founder, Mr. Kunio Ichinose? It's said that "he sees the world as a white canvas where he wishes to add colours with his restaurants to make people happy."

Double Beef Hamburg with Egg S$13.90
Taste: 6/10
Claiming to use Australian ground beef, the dish was somewhat disappointing due to the fact that the size of each patty was smaller than what it used to be. Even though it was acceptably tender, the onion sauce was weak. Truth be told, the best item was the smooth mashed potatoes that happened to be highly buttery as well.
Salmon Cream Pasta S$15.60
Taste: 6.5/10
Slightly more enjoyable would be the fusion dish, featuring spaghetti with salmon, mushrooms and white sauce. The pasta didn't quite attain the al dente level I was looking for, while the slices of salmon and mushrooms were slightly juicy. The white sauce could definitely be creamier as well.
Kuromitsu Caramel Ice Cream S$1.80
Taste: 6.5/10
No meal would be complete without a dessert dish, even though I actually had my share of waffle with gelato from Alfero Artisan Gelato afterwards on the same evening. The vanilla ice cream was velvety enough, but the kuromitsu (lit. black honey) grew increasingly sweet to the point of being too much at the end.
Melon's Rating
Taste: 6/10
Ambience: 7/10
Overall: 6.5/10
The food was edible for sure, but it'd be either standards have dropped, or the cook in the new branch wasn't really doing a good job. Pika's advice: With every purchase of a main course, you can get a glass of soft drink and a side dish for an additional S$3.00!
