TWN: TRA No. 1 Boxed Lunch Store (臺鐵便當本舖1號店)

Why eat snacks when you can have a 'bento' onboard the train?

Eating bento, or boxed meal, is something that I always look forward to whenever I'm in Taiwan and Japan. For our journey from Taipei Main Station to Xincheng Station that's the gateway to Taroko Gorge, my BFF and I bought our packed lunch to eat along the way.

Pikachu could no longer hold his hunger, jumping out of the backpack to munch on his bento.

Pork Chop Bento NT$80.00 (~S$3.60)
Taste: 7.5/10

Featuring quite a large pork chop with a kind of sweet and savoury sauce, the bento was decent. In addition to the adequately tender meat, there was a braised egg that could be more flavourful. The two types of vegetables weren't overcooked.

Vegetarian Bento NT$80.00 (~S$3.60)
Taste: 7.5/10

The meat-free bento wasn't bad at all, having a slab of beancurd and a mock meat made of beancurd skin. There were pickled vegetables in place of the braised egg. Besides that, the rice was cooked well without being dry at all.

Taste: 7.5/10

What about you? Are you excited about buying bentoPika's advice: There are more interesting, premium bento for sale according to the posters at the store, but there wasn't any available when we were there early in the morning. If you're interested, perhaps you need to visit the store a bit later during the day.
