BEL: Hampton by Hilton Minsk City Centre [Restaurant]

A place for a quick Belarusian fare, though mediocre...

We're down to the last post on Belarusian cuisine for the time being. After a very filling lunch at Kamyanitsa, my BFF and I went for something light for our last dinner in the country at the hotel where we were staying at. The restaurant offers a small selection of local cuisine.

We shared three dishes, skipping the sweet course as there wasn't any local dessert items anyway.

Borscht BYR 5.00 (~S$3.35)
Taste: 6.5/10

Compared to the one served at Kamyanitsa, the beetroot-based soup at the hotel wasn't as flavourful. It was adequately sweet, but not having a distinct character. The chicken meat was acceptably tender, accompanied by a few potatoes and cabbages and topped with a dollop of sour cream.

Herring with Potato and Egg BYR 6.00 (~S$4.05)
Taste: 7/10

The pickled herring certainly wasn't the best as I had the most stunning rendition thus far at Kuchmeister in Minsk as well. The herring hadn't been pickled long enough, methinks, although the texture was chewy alright. The two half eggs and potato wedges were accompanied by tartar sauce that was pretty rich and creamy.

Draniki with Sour Cream BYR 8.00 (~S$5.40)
Taste: 6.5/10

I started my journey in Belarus with its national dish, and ending it off with the potato pancakes as well. Alas, they weren't particularly memorable as they were a tad too doughy for my liking. The dish was visually appealing nonetheless. Pika's advice: Too plain for your taste? You may want to have the potato pancakes with bacon and mushrooms for BYR 15.00 (~S$10.10) or salmon for BYR 24.00 (~S$16.20).

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 6.5/10

While our last dinner wasn't fantastic, we had an awesome day visiting the highly impressive Belarusian Great Patriotic War Museum.
