SUR: Eetcafé de Gadri

Have you heard of 'moksi alesi' before?

Eetcafé de Gadri is a no-frills eatery situated near Fort Zeelandia in the capital city of Suriname, serving local cuisine. While the menu is only written in Dutch, the staff can speak English. One of them translated some of the dishes that my BFF and I couldn't recognise.

Pika's advice: Take note that some of the dishes are rotated daily. They seem to be the more interesting ones, I must say.

Bamie Vis SR$34.00 (~S$6.25)
Taste: 8/10

From the list of dishes that are available daily, we decided on the fried noodle that was executed well without being greasy. The fried Spanish mackerel was fresh and adequately salted. Other accompaniments were chives, fried plantain and pickled vegetables that were refreshing enough for the palate.

Moksi Alesi SR$45.00 (~S$8.30)
Taste: 9/10

The Surinamese mixed rice turned out to be really delicious. It came with smoked chicken drumstick that was really tender and fragrant, as well as a chunk of salted beef that was full of flavours. Besides fried plantain and pickled vegetables, there was also a Thai eggplant that was, unfortunately, a bit mushy.

Cake SR$12.50 (~S$2.30)
Taste: 7/10

The eatery doesn't have a dessert menu, but I did notice a few cakes and snacks on display near the cashier. We decided to share a small piece of spiced cake that had a lovely cinnamon taste, topped with sliced almonds and tiny sugar balls . Having said that, it'd be much better if it were to be moister.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

The eatery also serves dishes with bruine nasie (lit. brown rice), although I'm not too sure if it's the same healthy brown rice I have in mind.
