SUR: Roti Shop Joosje
A delight to chew the handmade 'roti'!
Suriname is a melting pot of cultures. For our first lunch in the capital city called Paramaribo, my BFF and I went to sample its Indian cuisine at a well-known eatery that has been around since 1942. Roti Shop Joosje provides no-frills dining with affordable prices.
I recall the lady owner at the counter being very friendly. We found out that she enjoys travelling as well. Her favourite destination in Southeast Asia is Malaysia. Truly Asia~

Bara SR$2.50 (~S$0.45)
Taste: 7.5/10
While waiting for our main courses to be served, we decided to share a snack called bara (Indian deep-fried fritter made of ground lentils and spices). While it wasn't fresh from the fryer, it was still warm and a tad crispy on the outer layer, served with spicy mashed potatoes.
Rijst Kip SR$30.00 (~S$5.50)
Taste: 7.5/10
Served together with white rice was a bowl of chicken, which could be juicier, cooked in thin gravy that was quite fragrant. As accompaniments, there were smashed potatoes mixed with garam masala (Indian spice mix) and chopped French beans that were full of natural juice.
Roti Lams SR$60.00 (~S$11.05)
Taste: 8/10
I really enjoyed the flatbread that had a delightfully chewy texture. Laden in spicy brown-coloured sauce were chunks of lambs that were tender enough for my liking with an adequate amount of fats, served with the same smashed potatoes and chopped French beans as mentioned above. However, the dish could use less salt.

It was a pity that sweet items, such as rasgulla (Indian cottage cheese balls in sugar syrup), weren't available that afternoon. Pika's advice: It's interesting to know that there are quite a few people debating online whether Roti Shop Joosje or Roopram Roti Restaurant serve better flatbread. I can't comment on the latter as I didn't dine there during my stay in Suriname, but I really like Joosje's version.
