SIN: Mid-Autumn 2019 Mooncakes @ East Ocean Teochew Restaurant

How decadent is the custard snowskin mooncake?

September is finally here. As always, here's this year's mooncake review before the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival comes, which falls on 13 September this year. This time round, I opted for more conventional flavours of snowskin mooncakes from East Ocean Teochew Restaurant, which has been around since 1992.

I purchased the mooncakes online from their website and collected them personally at the restaurant, which is housed inside Ngee Ann City at Orchard Road.

Assorted Mini Snowskin Mooncakes (8 pcs) S$62.00

I like the shades of colours of those mini mooncakes. There are two mooncakes of each of the four flavours: White Lotus PasteGreen Tea PastePurple Sweet Potato and Custard.

White Lotus Paste
Taste: 7.5/10

In general, I found the snowskin to be pretty soft and chewy enough for my liking without being too thick. The white lotus paste was sufficiently smooth, and it wasn't that sweet.

Green Tea Paste
Taste: 8.5/10

My favourite would be the green tea paste. Having a beautiful green colour, it was adequately thick and fragrant. It was mildly sweet without having any bitter aftertaste.

Purple Sweet Potato
Taste: 7/10

The purple sweet potato flavour has just made its debut this year. Apparently, it wasn't that special as it didn't have a distinctive taste. The texture of the starchy mash was alright.

Custard
Taste: 7/10

I was harbouring a high expectation for the custard flavour. While it wasn't utterly disappointing, it could certainly be richer and creamier. Texture wise, it was actually the smoothest of all.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10

The restaurant also sells boxes of four mini snowskin mooncakes instead of eight. Pika's advice: I'm not too sure how long will it last, but you can still get a 10% discount when placing your order online.
