JPN: APA Hotel Nagasaki Ekimae (アパホテル長崎駅前) [Breakfast]

Take your pick: Japanese or Western breakfast?

My BFFs and I spent the last two nights in Kyushu, Japan at APA Hotel Nagasaki Ekimae (3*) before flying off to Kobe. Conveniently located across the road from Nagasaki railway station, the no-frills hotel offers breakfast, though not buffet style, in its Irish pub. Two different sets are served daily: Japanese and Western.

Japanese Breakfast
Taste: 6.5/10

I had the Japanese set on the first morning. It wasn't the most delicious, but I was certainly grateful that it was adequate and tasted alright. Besides a piece of salmon that could be fresher, there was a piece of deep-fried frozen scallop topped with a bit of tartar sauce. I found the rice topped with black salt to be fluffy enough for my liking and the side dish of glass noodle marinated in vinegar to be quite refreshing. The miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup was pretty standard.

Western Breakfast
Taste: 7/10

On the second morning, I sampled the Western set that turned out to be somewhat more appetising. What I really enjoyed was the toast as it was executed well: crispy without being dry at all. The corn soup, which most likely came out of the can, was thick enough for my liking. While the scrambled eggs could be milkier and fluffier, they were adequately moist. Another item worth mentioning would be the mashed potatoes that were quite velvety.

Orange Juice & Coffee

The beverages are free-flow. The coffee that wasn't too bad without any lingering acidity in the mouth, while the orange juice had quite a good sweet and sour balance.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 8.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

The ambience of the Irish pub is lovely. I enjoyed the upbeat tune of the Irish folk music being played over breakfast.
