JPN: Bento @ Foodway (弁当 @ フードウェイ)

Chinese... I mean Japanese style Chinese 'bento', anyone?

As we weren't feeling too hungry on our last night in Kumamoto, Japan, my BFFs and I decided to take away our dinner to eat at the hotel. Our exploration at Sakura Machi Kumamoto led us to a big supermarket called Foodway, where each of us picked a box of meal that caught our interest to share.

You're not wrong if you think that one of the above meals doesn't look that Japanese.

Chinese Bento ¥450 (~S$5.65)
Taste: 6.5/10

The actual name of the dish is 中華弁当, comprising egg fried rice, accompanied by fried chicken, chili shrimp, ngoh hiang (Chinese five-spice pork roll), spring roll, beansprouts and pickled radish. The best item was the egg fried rice that was rather fluffy, followed by the ngoh hiang balls that tasted pretty authentic.

Pork Cutlet Rice ¥498 (~S$6.25)
Taste: 7.5/10

The actual name of the dish is ロースカツ丼. Sitting on a bed of white rice were big chunks of breaded pork cutlets, each having a strip of fats along the side, topped with spring onions and pickled radish. Although not crunchy, they were surprisingly quite tender and thus enjoyable.

Hiroshima Okonomiyaki ¥498 (~S$6.25)
Taste: 5.5/10

The actual name of the dish is 広島風お好み焼き. Underneath the cabbage-filled egg omelette, which went well with mayonnaise included in a small packet (not shown), was a serving of yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried buckwheat noodle). While the dish was fairly flavourful, the noodle was regrettably a bit pasty.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10

Nothing beats cooked-to-order meals, of course, but I always like to try those packaged meals whenever in Japan. Pika's advice: If you're not in a hurry to have your dinner, I'm quite certain that you can get those meals even cheaper after a certain time in the evening.
