JPN: Yoshinoya (𠮷野家)
Better than the ones here in Singapore! :P
Overall: 7/10
First opened at Nihonbashi fish market in Tokyo, Japan in 1899, Yoshinoya is one of the biggest chain of beef bowl restaurants, second only to Sukiya. Since 1975, it has expanded its business overseas with the USA as its first target. After visiting Sukiya and Matsuya numerous times in Japan, I finally decided to try Yoshinoya for the first time last year in Kobe.
To tell the truth, many of my Japanese friends and those currently living in Japan have been saying that Yoshinoya pales in comparison to Sukiya and Matsuya. That's the reason why I'd been holding back from trying Yoshinoya.
Pork Bowl (Regular) ¥338 (~S$4.50)
Taste: 7/10
The actual name of the dish is 豚丼 (並). Take note that the individual bowl doesn't come with free soup. Served with an adequate amount of onions and garnished with sesame seeds, the pork slices were pretty tender. However, the pork bowl was kind of lacking in the meat jus.
Set B (Shijimi Miso Soup) ¥232 (~S$3.05)
Taste: 8/10
To complete the meal, I ordered the set comprising pickled Napa cabbages that were really zesty and miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup that came with lots of small freshwater clams. Pika's advice: Not a fan of those small clams? You can opt for Asari Miso Soup for the same price. Alternatively, you can go for the normal Miso Soup that is cheaper or Pork Soup that is slightly pricier.
Sliced Beef Ribs Set (Regular) ¥598 (~S$7.90)
Taste: 8/10
The actual name of the set is 牛カルビ定食, inclusive of rice and miso soup. The sliced beef ribs were executed well, for they were with springy and juicy enough with a smoky taste that was appetising. The accompanying bean paste sauce was adequately spicy. Sitting next to the beef were some shredded cabbages to keep your digestive system healthy and happy.
Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7/10Overall: 7/10
It wasn't too shabby a dinner for sure, certainly better than what I could get from the branches here in Singapore. Still, Matsuya is my number one favourite.
