MAS: David Brown's Restaurant & Tea Terrace

Not so often you'll get a main course with curly fries as a side!

Perched on Strawberry Hill, one of the peaks of Penang Hill in Malaysia, is a cosy place to have a meal and/or sip a cup of tea in a British colonial building. There are also some seats outside for those who prefer to enjoy the view of the lush greenery surrounding the restaurant. My group went there to celebrate my mother's birthday during the trip.

We opted for our al fresco dining at the restaurant named after a Scottish philanthropist stationed in Penang during the British colonial days.

Bread

We started off with complimentary dinner rolls that were served warm. Going well with salted butter, they were delightfully fluffy.

Smoked Salmon Linguine in Creamy White Sauce RM 40.00 (~S$13.00)
Taste: 8/10

Linguine is my most favourite type of pasta, and it was nicely executed by the restaurant. The white sauce was rich and creamy enough for my liking, adequately seasoned with black pepper and dried herbs. I suppose they weren't stingy with the amount of smoked salmon slices either, which thankfully weren't overly salty.

Chicken Cacciatore RM 46.00 (~S$14.90)
Taste: 7.5/10

Italian for 'hunter', cacciatore style refers to the blend of tomatoes, onions, herbs and sometimes red wine, though the restaurant most likely doesn't use the alcohol in preparing this particular dish. Anyway, the chicken was delectably tender, though the sauce was rather oily. There could be more vegetables, but I was certainly thankful for the curly fries that weren't soggy.

Fish and Chips RM 46.00 (~S$14.90)
Taste: 8/10

My mother and sister shared a classic British dish of deep-fried fish coated in batter served with not only fries, but also a side salad. Though being slightly on the thicker side, the batter was truly crunchy without being greasy. The tangy tartar sauce went well with the fresh tilapia. While the fries were pretty good, the leafy greens could be fresher.

Bread and Butter Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream RM 24.00 (~S$7.80)
Taste: 7.5/10

I should've brought a small candle to put on the bread and butter pudding for my mother. Anyway, even though it might not look especially appetising, the dessert was actually moist and tasted great with a nice aroma of cinnamon. I also appreciated the fact that the vanilla ice cream came to the table looking firm and handn't started melting.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8.5/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

I'm actually not too sure if the restaurant is Halal-certified, but I suppose they don't use pork or lard, and I don't think they serve alcoholic beverages either as far as I can remember. Pika's advice: The restaurant also whips up a few local dishes, but they were all sold out when we were there in the evening. I'm sure there's a higher chance of getting them during lunch hours.
