SIN: The Market Grill
Lobster or beef? Or perhaps both?
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10
Tucked in the vicinity of Telok Ayer is The Market Grill, a bistro offering quality seafood and meat. The interior features a whimsical mix of old style butchery and diner, coupled with a light industrial touch. That evening, I enjoyed my dinner with my dining partner at the counter seat directly facing the lobster tank.
Whole Lobster (Char-Grilled) S$56.00
Taste: 8/10
Flown in from Boston, the USA, the whole lobster presented before my eyes wasn't particularly big, but it was char-grilled well with an inviting smokiness that elevated its natural sweetness. It was served with garlic butter sauce, velvety mashed potatoes and a bit of salad tossed with balsamic vinegar. Pika's advice: Instead of char-grilled, you can enjoy your lobster steamed for the same price or Thermidor style for an additional S$5.00.
Black Angus Beef Bavette S$45.00
Taste: 8/10
My dining partner opted for some red meat, which was supposed to come with a choice of potato on the side choice, but she decided forgo the carbohydrates. Anyway, the beef done medium was tasty and tender, decorated with an assortment of rocket leaves, cherry tomatoes, chestnuts and caramelised onions.
Burrata Salad S$20.00
Taste: 8/10
Dessert of the Day S$12.00
Taste: 7.5/10
There's a small selection of fixed dessert items on the menu, but I decided to ask the waiter for the dessert of the day that happened to be panna cotta (lit. cooked cream). While it wasn't the best, it was velvety enough for my liking without being cloying. It was nicely topped with buttery crumbs and a dollop of chocolate mousse.
