SIN: Butterknife Folk {National Day 2020}
Not a fan of the local 'chee cheong fun', but the ice cream was good!
I shall take the opportunity to write about something local today. Singapore celebrated its 55th birthday on 9 August 2020. In conjunction with our National Day, an ice cream stall named Butterknife Folk, which has been around since 2016, is offering a total of 43 local flavours for the entire month of August.

I told my friend, "Let's try two savoury and two sweet flavours!" Pika's advice: Take note that the flavours are rotated daily, so do try your luck before the end of the month. For one, I didn't see the chicken rice flavour, which has been the talk of the town, last Saturday.
Double Scoop S$9.00
Chee Cheong Fun - Taste: 8.5/10
Laksa - Taste: 7/10
I don't really fancy our local chee cheong fun (Chinese rice noodle roll) because of the sweet sauce, so I was initially unsure whether I'd want to try the ice cream version. Lo and behold, I found the rice milk ice cream with swirls of the sauce, primarily made of hoisin sauce (Chinese sauce made of starch, soybeans, vinegar, etc.), to be enjoyable. It was sweet and slightly savoury with a nice hint of smokiness from roasted sesame seeds.
What about the laksa (Peranakan dish of noodle in rich coconut gravy) flavour, you ask? The coconut milk ice cream mixed with shrimp paste had some finely chopped Vietnamese coriander and tofu puffs for an added texture. Overall, it was sweet and rich alright, but I thought it'd be better if it were to be slightly savoury with a tinge of spiciness to jolt the taste buds.
Double Scoop S$9.00
Ice Jelly with Fruit Cocktail - Taste: 8/10
Sugarcane Lemon - Taste: 9/10
Here in Singapore, aiyu (lit. loving jade) jelly is known as ice jelly, typically served in a bowl with calamansi juice and canned fruit cocktail. While that scoop didn't ctually include the jelly, the calamansi ice cream did carry with it the bits of fruits. It was certainly refreshing with a nice balance of the sweet and the sour.
If you like sugarcane juice, you definitely shouldn't miss its awesome ice cream counterpart. To be frank, I didn't expect it to be so concentrated and aromatic. There was also an adequate amount of lemon juice that went into the making of the ice cream, lending its citrusy goodness to the scoop full of natural sugar that kept me wanting for more.

Taste: 8/10
I was actually looking forward to trying the goreng pisang (lit. banana fritter) flavour, which happened to be made that evening, but sadly it was sold out.
