SIN: Epiphyte

Edible terrarium, anyone?

An epiphyte is a non-parasitic plant that grows on another plant, which makes a good houseplant due to the minimal water and soil requirements. Located in Tanjong Pagar, the gastropub that shares the same name as this particular type of plant has a lovely decor and whips up visually stunning dishes too.

Are you scratching your head trying to guess the dish on the left in the photo above?

Tempura Pork Maki S$9.00
Taste: 7/10

Sitting on a few fresh leaves for added colours, the Japanese rice roll stuffed with braised pork was certainly not a bad start to the dinner. I was thankful for the fact that the rice didn't fall apart easily, although the meat wasn't as flavourful as expected. The batter was crunchy enough for my liking, while the fresh chili did add a good kick.

Watermelon Pomelo Pork Belly S$18.00
Taste: 8.5/10

It was definitely a first for me to have watermelon and pomelo with pork belly, and it turned out to be quite a magical moment. Even though the pomelo could be juicier, the natural sugar contained in the fruits certainly helped to cut through the sinful fats of the pork belly. Of course, I also relished the crispy pork crackling.

Pink Risotto S$26.00
Taste: 7.5/10

The intense pink colour of the dish might appear scary at first, but fear not, the gastropub is using beetroot juice in concocting this particular main course. Although it wasn't gimmicky, I felt that the risotto could be richer and creamier. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the bouncy seared scallops and salmon roe, as well as the crispy rice puffs.

Epiphyte Terrarium S$18.00
Taste: 8.5/10

Behold, the beautifully presented edible terrarium that was the very reason why I decided to check Epiphyte out. The moss-like pandan sponge cake was delightfully moist, coupled with coconut ice cream that looked like a rock. Cocoa dust, milk snow, nuts and flowers served to add to not only the visual effects, but also the collective texture of the dessert.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

The gastropub believes that it's "[their] privilege to serve [us]", thus they don't add service charge to the bill. Pika's advice: Take note that cocktail happy hours are from 6.30pm to 9.00pm.
