SIN: Chug Chug
"Where friends become family"
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe the gastrobar used to be open in the afternoon as well. At the point of writing, however, it's open only from 5.30pm daily.
Chug Chug is a gastrobar located in the heart of Tanjong Pagar. As the owner is a lover of fusion food, it's "constantly experimenting and coming up with new dishes, keeping [its] menu fresh for customers." Needless to say, it also offers a wide selection of alcoholic drinks, but I found myself chugging a non-alcoholic beverage instead during my visit.

Fried Mushrooms with Curry Cream S$13.00
Taste: 8/10
As one of the two signature appetisers, the deep-fried mushrooms whetted my appetite as they were juicy. Coated with delightfully crunchy batter, they were neither soggy nor overly oily. Mixed with curry leaves and bird's eye chilis, the curry cream sauce was velvety enough for my liking, though I'd love to have a bit more of it.
Fiery Mala Pasta S$18.00
Taste: 7/10
For the uninitiated, mala is a spicy and numbing seasoning made from Sichuan peppercorn and chili pepper. The spaghetti dish was pretty good, but not as fiery as expected. There were pork slices, crab sticks, baby corns and the same deep-fried mushrooms as the appetiser dish sans the curry sauce.
Chug's Wasabi Prime Beef Burger S$18.90
Taste: 8/10
I enjoyed the USA prime beef patty that was succulent, paired with Monterey Jack, aged cheddar, onion jam and rocket leaves. The wasabi (Japanese horseradish) mayonnaise had a bit of a kick, but it could certainly be more powerful. The bun was just a tad dry, but otherwise, the burger was good. Also, the shoestring fries were executed well.
Chug's Ice Tea S$4.50
Taste: 7.5/10
I wasn't in the mood for booze, especially since I already drank a lot the previous evening, so I went for a glass of homemade lemon tea decorated with a slice of lemon. Being fragrant enough, it was quite refreshing with an adequate amount of sugar. Pika's advice: If you love mango, you may want to try Chug's Mango Ice Tea, which is priced at S$6.00.
