SIN: The Drunken Poet
Irish pub with quite a good ambience, but without traditional music...
By somewhere, I mean the infamous Orchard Towers that houses quite a number of, sorry to say, prostitutes. Anyway, you don't actually need to enter the building as the pub is only accessible from the outside. That aside, I'm not sure if the pub plays traditional Irish music at all, but it wasn't the case when I was there, which was a pity.
Tomorrow is 26 February 2021, which is the 10th anniversary of my food blog! Pikachu and Melon would like to thank everyone for the continuous support and love. As an early celebration, we went to The Drunken Poet, which is "arguably one of the best Irish pubs in Singapore" as mentioned in their website. It's located somewhere in Orchard.

Irish Potato and Bacon Cakes S$12.00
Taste: 8.5/10
I made the right choice by ordering one of its signature bar bites. While waiting for the main courses to come, I had some nice potato cakes studded with chopped bacon. Deep-fried till golden brown, they were crunchy outside, but moist and velvety inside. The dollop of sour cream topped with a bit of chopped spring onions was a good accompaniment to the potato cakes.
Lemon Parmesan Crusted Baked Fish S$22.00
Taste: 6/10
This particular main course appeared quite different from the photo shown in the menu booklet. The barramundi was moist alright, but the mixture of breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese and lemon zest was a tad dry and not cheesy enough. The saving grace was the rich cream sauce and the roasted potatoes, carrots and broccoli, all of which were naturally sweet.
Guinness Beef Brisket Stew S$24.00
Taste: 6/10
As one of the signature main courses, the beef brisket stew infused with Guinness stout actually tasted good, but it suffered from a major issue. Probably my salt tolerance isn't too high, but had the salt level been much lower, I would've licked the bowl clean. Inside the thick stew were tender beef brisket, carrots and potatoes. The garlic bread served on the side was crunchy and fragrant.
Homemade Ice Lemon Tea S$5.00
Taste: 8/10
By the time I finished the savoury dishes, I'd already felt pretty full as I also had some alcoholic drinks along the way. Not wanting to get any of the dessert items, I decided to end the night with a glass of homemade lemon tea. With a good amount of acidity, the tea was aromatic and sweet enough for my liking.
Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the kitchen used to operate till 4.00am. However, it closes at 10.30pm at the point of writing as that's the stipulated time when the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks have to cease under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) Act. Pika's advice: If you need to get a big bite, perhaps you may want to go for any of the burgers. I saw two tables ordering them, which looked pretty good.
