SIN: Guzman y Gomez

"Tell your taste buds their siesta is over!"

Guzman y Gomez is a chain of eateries specialising in Mexican food. I started picking up Spanish just recently. Knowing that the word y means 'and', I suppose it's founded by two people named Guzman and Gomez. At the point of writing, there are five branches across the island. I visited the one at Tanjong Pagar.

For each savoury dish ordered, you get to choose your filling.

Two Quesadillas (Slow Roasted Pork) S$8.50
Taste: 8/10

Commonly described as the toasties of Mexico, quesadillas are soft corn tortillas stuffed with cheese as the defining ingredient, among others. I was pleased with the eatery's version of quesadillas where the melted Australian Jack cheese complemented the spicy pulled pork well. The freshly chopped salsa gave them a refreshing zing.

Burrito (Mild Grilled Chicken) S$10.90
Taste: 7/10

Even though the burrito wasn't bad at all, I wasn't so impressed with it. I noted that a bit of the white rice was overcooked and another bit was just a tad hard. Otherwise, the rest of the ingredients that were hand-wrapped in soft flour tortilla, such as rubbed chicken thigh, black beans, salsa and cheese, were pretty enjoyable.

Churros with Chocolate Sauce S$4.50
Taste: 8/10

Why not finish your meal with something sweet? Churros, the one and only dessert item sold at selected outlets, are deep-fried choux pastry. Rolled in an adequate amount of cinnamon sugar, the two pieces were delectably crunchy. They were served with chocolate-infused dulce de leche (Latin American confection prepared by slowly heating sweetened milk) that was quite addictive.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6.5/10
Overall: 7/10

I shall try their tacos next time. Pika's advice: I'm not sure how things are now with the COVID-19 pandemic, but the eatery used to have a self-service salsa bar where one could get some sauce with varying levels of spiciness. I suppose you can still ask for them from the counter.
