SIN: Kwan Inn Vegetarian [Delivery]

Take your pick: mock beef, chicken, duck or pork?

Even though I'm not a vegetarian, much less a vegan, I occasionally indulge in vegetarian food. Founded in the 1990s, Kwan Inn Vegetarian has been providing vegetarian food at affordable prices, starting with only one stall at 269 Queen Street in Bugis. At the point of writing, there are three other stalls, including one housed inside People's Park Centre in Chinatown.

Braised Duck Rice S$4.20
Taste: 7.5/10

I know some people are averse to gluten-based mock meat, but not me. I enjoyed the gluten-based mock duck slices. They were sitting on brown-coloured rice, cooked in braising sauce, having good enough taste and texture. While the braised peanuts could be more flavourful, the stir-fried cabbages, carrots and mushrooms weren't too shabby.

Fragrant Hainan Chicken Rice S$4.20
Taste: 7/10

While not as fragrant as expected, the rice was mildly flavoured and fluffy enough. Decorated with coriander leaves, the mock chicken had a bouncy texture. There was a serving of braised peanuts too. More importantly, I must say that the chili sauce was powerful enough for my liking with a nice tinge of acidity.

Nasi Lemak S$4.20
Taste: 5.5/10

I had high hopes for the pandan and coconut milk-infused rice, but alas, it was a tad dry and not as fragrant as expected. It was accompanied by mock beef rendang - a kind of dry curry - that was mildly spicy, but without flavour. Also, there were peanuts that weren't so crunchy and chili sauce that was slightly sweet and spicy.

Zai Mee Fen S$3.70
Taste: 6/10

The vegetarian rice vermicelli dish was nothing to rave about, but it was filling enough. I could tell that the stir-fried rice vermicelli was cooked with a controlled amount of oil, so it wasn't too greasy. Besides stir-fried cabbages, carrots and mushrooms, there were some sliced mock char siew (Chinese barbecued pork). The pickled green chili was adequately sweet and sour.
