SIN: Flaming Don

Have you had black 'sushi' rice before?

I've reviewed a few eateries managed by the Creative Eateries group. Here's another one, which I think is the best compared to other brands thus far. Located on the fifth floor of Bugis+, Flaming Don specialises in Japanese rice bowls. In addition, it also whips up a number of ramen and salad bowls, along with side dishes.

I haven't tried any of the ramen or salad bowls though.

Signature Flaming Beef Don S$17.90
Taste: 8/10

The pride of the restaurant is the rice bowl that features seared Australian tenderloin cubes glazed with honey black pepper sauce. The juicy beef cubes aside, the sauce was nicely sweet and smoky, although the heat level could be higher. They came with onsen tamago (lit. hot spring egg) that was executed well, garlic chips and lettuce leaves.

Miso Buta Yaki Don S$11.90
Taste: 7.5/10

Also enjoyable was the rice bowl featuring sliced pork belly topped with garlic miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) sauce, raw egg yolk and chopped spring onions. I was hoping that the meat would be more succulent, but anyway, I enjoyed the sauce that was garlicky enough for my liking.

Salmon Chirashi Don S$14.90
Taste: 6/10

I was looking forward to try the black vinegared rice, but it turned out that it wasn't seasoned enough to achieve that nice balance of sweet and sour taste. Accompanied by sakura denbu (Japanese seasoned codfish condiment), the raw salmon cubes were adequately fresh. I found that, the wasabi (Japanese horseradish) didn't have much of a kick.

Kani Cream Croquette S$5.90
Taste: 8/10

For the price, the crab cream croquettes were worth ordering. Sure, there wasn't much of the crustacean meat, but they were executed well. Topped with mayonnaise, the two pieces were delightfully crunchy without being greasy.

The filling was rich and creamy. If I can say a bit more, I was hoping that it'd be slightly runnier.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

At the point of writing, there's one other branch at Bukit Panjang Plaza. Pika's advice: You may want to top up S$2.99 for free-flow miso soup and a drink of choice.
