SIN: Thai Pan Restaurant - 2nd

Thai Pan's butter squid for the last time!

I hardly write about the same restaurant twice, but here's a tribute to Thai Pan Restaurant that I've known since my secondary school days. Though not entirely shocking given the current COVID-19 pandemic, I'm certainly saddened by the news that they'll only be around till 30 June 2021 after a good 18 years of operation.

I wrote about the now-defunct branch at Civil Service Club @ Changi during my undergraduate days back in 2011. You may want to take a look at the (rather cringeworthy) post that's more than 10 years old.

Thai Pan Olive Fried Rice S$8.00
Taste: 8/10

The sole chef's recommendation from the list of rice and noodle dishes, which is only available in one size, proved to be satisfying. Mixed with eggs and cashew nuts, the fried rice was executed well with the expected wok hei (lit. breath of the wok). It came with quite a generous portion of saucy minced meat, as well as raw onions and green mango strips.

Pad Thai (Medium) S$8.00
Taste: 7.5/10

After all these years, I finally ordered their Thai style stir-fried rice noodle. While it was pretty tasty, it'd be much better if the smoky aroma of the wok were to be as intense as in its fried rice counterpart. The adequately bouncy rice noodle was cooked with eggs, onions, cabbages and a bit of sliced chicken.

Butter Squid (Small) S$16.00
Taste: 8/10

Once again, the ever-popular squid dish was as satisfying as in all previous visits, even though I'm forever hoping that it could be even more buttery. Being fresh and bouncy, the squid pieces were lightly coated with batter before being thrown into the fryer. Afterwards, they were tossed with mouth-watering butter sauce and quite a generous amount of curry leaves.

Longan with Honey Sea Coconut (Small) S$3.50
Taste: 8/10

I was told by a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner that I ought to avoid longans as much as possible, so I indulge in them only once in a blue moon. Who could resist the temptation of juicy longans and crunchy honey sea coconut? Also, I appreciated the presence of a soft and silky third wheeler, I mean aiyu (lit. loving jade) jelly, that provided a nice textural contrast.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Thank you for the food and the memories, Thai Pan! Pika's advice: The restaurant is able to deliver to addresses within 3 km. In addition, it's offering free delivery with minimum order of S$30.00.
