SIN: Yummo Chow

Do you fancy deep-fried ice cream?

Nestled inside one of the conserved pre-war shophouses near the flagship national library of Singapore, Yummo Chow is a cosy little restaurant that you may want to go to if you feel like having deep-fried ice cream. It may not have too obvious a sign from the outside, so it's easier to look for Hotel NuVe Heritage that houses it.

Shown above are two main courses that I tried. I enjoyed one of them, but not the other one. Care to make a guess?

Wasabi Mayo Prawn S$10.90
Taste: 5/10

The restaurant offers a selection of small grabs. I went for the prawns, although I should've expected that they'd be those frozen breaded ones. Besides that, the mayonnaise infused with wasabi (Japanese horseradish) would be better if they were less runny. As a fan of sesame seeds, I thought they were a nice touch to the dish.

Signature Grilled Chicken Chop S$19.90
Taste: 8/10

The grilled chicken thigh was lovely as it was succulent, going well with the potent black pepper sauce. Even though it was slightly burnt on the outside, I didn't really mind that as it made the edges of the skin really crispy. The salad was pretty fresh and the fries were executed well, even though they could tone down the salt a little bit for the latter. Pika's advice: If you're not a fan of black pepper, you may want to opt for brown sauce instead. Also, should you need a bit more carbohydrates, you can top up S$4.90 for a small portion of Mushroom Aglio Olio Pasta.

Chili Crab Pasta S$24.90
Taste: 3/10

Supposedly one of the recommended dishes, the chili crab pasta that came with sliced mushrooms and seaweed strips was downright disappointing. Unlike how typical chili crab sauce should be, the tomato-cum-chili sauce whipped up by the restaurant was way too spicy, not to mention that it grew cloying too at some point. As for the spaghetti, it was slightly overcooked.

Tempura Ice Cream S$12.90
Taste: 7.5/10

A guilty pleasure drizzled with quite a generous amount of caramel sauce and topped unevenly with castor sugar, the deep-fried ice cream stuffed inside a bun wasn't too shabby. To my satisfaction, it wasn't greasy at all.

Upon cutting it open, I could see that the vanilla ice cream inside retained its firmness.

Melon's Rating
