CAN: Beavertails
No beavers are harmed in the making!
Fancy some deep-fried dough pastries that are individually hand-stretched to resemble the tails of beavers? BeaverTails is a Canadian chain that originated in Killaloe in 1978, and established its first permanent store in Ottawa in 1981. Since then, it's expanded to six countries, including the USA, the UAE, Mexico, France and Japan at the point of writing.
Poutine C$10.75 (~S$10.60)
Taste: 7.5/10
Truth be told, I'm actually not so big a fan of poutine, a quintessential Quebecois specialty that combines fries, gravy and cheese curds. However, since I was in Canada again, I decided to give it another try. The melting cheese curds provided a rather delightful gooey sensation, and I was glad that the gravy wasn't too heavy.
Mehple C$7.70 (~S$7.60)
Taste: 7/10
My BFF and I decided to share two of the pastries, one of which was topped with maple-flavoured spread, maple sugar crunch and castor sugar. I enjoyed the crunchy texture of the pastry that wasn't dry, but I thought they could do away with the castor sugar that heightened the level of sweetness further.
Killaloe Sunrise C$7.70 (~S$7.60)
Taste: 8/10
The pastry dusted with cinnamon powder and sugar, coupled with a pinch of lemon juice, proved to be the more delectable treat. With each bite, I was greeted by a harmonious combination of sweet and sour notes. Anyway, Killaloe is a quaint little town located to the west of Ottawa, which is blessed with natural beauty.
Hot Chocolate C$4.00 (~S$3.95)
Taste: 5.5/10
Lastly, seeking warmth on a chilly day, I ordered a cup of hot chocolate drink. While it looked pretty promising with a velvety texture, the drink fell short in delivering the rich, chocolatey taste I'd hoped for.
Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
A few items are available as vegan friendly options. Pika's advice: Would you like to try Poutail, which is poutine served on top of their signature pastry?
