CAN: St. Lawrence Market

Where you can find the "world famous peameal bacon on a bun"!

Originally opened in 1902, St. Lawrence Market is an iconic public market in Toronto, Canada, a culinary hotspot showcasing more than 120 merchants. The current building incorporates one that was once home to the first permanent city hall and jailhouse that operated from 1845 to 1899. During our visit, my BFF and I sampled some delights for breakfast.

Having been around for over 30 years, Carousel Bakery is known for their peameal bacon sandwich.

Peameal Bacon Sandwich C$6.45 (~S$6.40)
Taste: 7.5/10

For the uninitiated, peameal bacon holds a special place in the culinary tradition of Ontario. It's a wet-cured, non-smoked back bacon made from trimmed lean boneless pork loin rolled in cornmeal. While I wouldn't consider it a life-changing experience, biting into the succulent bacon sandwiched in between buttered buns was delightful enough.

Another recommended stall is St. Lawrence Pizza and Pasta that's been around since 1996.

Pepperoni Pizza (1 Slice) C$4.60 (~S$4.55)
Taste: 7.5/10

Seeing that both of us ordered just a slice of pizza, the staff cut it in half, a thoughtful gesture indeed. Despite not having too generous an amount of toppings, the delish flavour of the pepperoni slices complemented the melted cheese and tangy tomato sauce underneath well. The dough wasn't too thick with a nice crunch.

Tri-Colour Lasagna C$14.00 (~S$13.85)
Taste: 8/10

What enticed me more, however, was the tri-colour sauce for their pasta dishes. Opting for lasagna, which was pretty loaded with juicy minced beef, we were pleasantly surprised by the overall taste of the dish. We really enjoyed the symphony of the sweet and sour tomato sauce, the aromatic notes of the pesto and the savoury melted cheese.

Last but not least, we dropped by Buster's Sea Cove for a treat from the ocean.

Chicken and Shrimp Gumbo C$6.75 (~S$6.70)
Taste: 8/10

Gumbo is a beloved Creole stew that's the official state cuisine of Louisiana, the USA. The thick soup featuring the Creole 'holy trinity' of bell peppers, celery and onions was hearty. With bits of chicken breast and shrimps, as well as okra slices, each spoonful of the warm broth was a comforting delight.

Grilled Shrimps C$16.95 (~S$16.80)
Taste: 8/10

Sitting on a bed of crisp lettuce leaves, cucumber slices and red onions was a quintet of grilled shrimps, a treat for both the eyes and the palate. The fresh, succulent shrimps exuded a smoky aroma with a delectable charred exterior. Don't forget the wedge of lemon, sweet and sour Thai chili sauce and creamy salad dressing on the side.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
