SIN: Ohayo Mama San

Frequent offer: 50% off Japanese high tea!

Describing itself as a gastrobar, Ohayo Mama San at 313@Somerset serves a delightful array Japanese and fusion dishes in a brightly lit setting with predominantly blue and orange tones. While I'd been there twice for dinner, particularly intrigued by its cocktail selections, I recently decided to try its Japanese high tea offering with a friend.

Japanese High Tea Set (Weekday) S$58.00
Taste: 7/10

Presented on a wooden bench-like platter, their Japanese high tea tidbits come with a pot of your choice from four different kinds of tea. The price is rather steep for a small set for two, but I was drawn by the 50% discount.

Assorted Stuff #1 (Set Menu)

I really enjoyed the creamy truffle mashed potato slider, which was paired with a slice of ham and crisp lettuce on a buttery bun. Both the Japanese rice rolls featured chicken as the protein, a rather interesting twist from the usual seafood. Additionally, there were the classic peanut butter and jam sandwiches at the top.

Assorted Stuff #2 (Set Menu)

The two cupcakes had rich flavours. While I preferred the chocolate cupcake to its vanilla counterpart, both of them weren't as moist as I'd love them to be. As for the taiyaki (Japanese sea bream-shaped cake), they weren't so fluffy, although the red bean filling was rather generous and not too sweet.

Assorted Stuff #3 (Set Menu)

While the scones were pretty small in size, they were adequately buttery and crumbly for my liking. They came with a side of clotted cream and strawberry jam. The two macarons had an invitingly crisp exterior, but the coffee buttercream and caramel filling were too sweet.

100% Organic Japanese Detox Blend (Set Menu)

TWG Geisha Blossom Tea aside, my attention turned to the three tea blends sourced from Japan. I eventually decided on the soothing blend crafted from burdock roots, dandelion roots, fennel seeds, milk thistle, lemon balm and peppermint, which was comforting on the stomach.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

The selection of tidbits rotates regularly. At the point of writing, the 50% discount is on as the gastrobar is going to move to another location in the near future. Pika's advice: It's definitely more worth it to go on weekdays as the high tea set costs S$68.00 on weekends and public holidays.
