MAS: Tavern Kitchen & Bar
Fried rice with a local ingredient called 'tuhau'!
Given that my BFF and I only had one day at Kota Kinabalu after returning from the mountainous region, we decided to go to Imago Shopping Mall to have lunch at the highly rated Tavern Kitchen & Bar. It's a restaurant serving mainly Western and fusion dishes.

The sight of sizzling chocolate sauce surrounding a piece of brownie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on a hotplate was glorious. I felt that the cake could be moister with a better texture, but it wasn't bad at all. The sauce had the right degree of sweetness.

Baked Mac and Cheese RM 19.90 (~S$6.30)
Taste: 8/10
Despite its pale appearance, the appetiser dish of baked macaroni and cheese was lipsmackingly good. Topped with parmesan cheese, it was quite rich and creamy without imparting any cloying sensations at all.
Nasi Goreng Tuhau with Fried Chicken and Bambangan RM 24.90 (~S$7.90)
Taste: 7.5/10
Has anyone tasted tuhau (a type of wild ginger growing in Sabah wild ginger) before? Chopped finely and fried with rice, it did have a unique aroma, albeit pretty faint as there were dried shrimps around. The fried chicken was quite juicy, while the acar (lit. pickles) with bambangan, or Sabahan mango, was so-so.
Pasta Goreng Mamak with Chicken RM 16.70 (~S$5.30)
Taste: 8.5/10
The local dish cooked using spaghetti instead of yellow noodle claimed the top spot for the afternoon as it wasn't only al dente, but also bursting with flavours. It was a joy slurping each strand of the pasta, but I was hoping for it to be spicier and have more chicken meat and beancurd.
Boom Boom Sizzling Brownie RM 19.90 (~S$6.30)
Taste: 8/10

Pika's advice: Up for a challenge? If can finish any one of the sinful Monster Shake selections by yourself in less than two minutes, you need not pay for that. Our visit to Kota Kinabalu happened to coincide with the annual month-long Harvest Festival, shown in the decor of the shopping mall.
