SIN: Hot Star Large Fried Chicken

How's the award-winning Taiwanese deep-fried chicken in Singapore?

Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is a well-known snack shop at Shilin Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan that serves huge chicken cutlets sought after by many visitors. It was set up in 1999, but its history actually dates back to 1992 somewhere in Taichung. Does anyone know if the original shop is still operating?

Original Large Fried Chicken Bento S$6.50
Taste: 7/10

The moderately crunchy deep-fried chicken breast was seasoned with a concoction of ngo hiang (Chinese five-spice powder consisting of cloves, star anise, fennel seeds, cinnamon and Sichuan pepper), chili powder, salt, pepper and sugar. It was pretty good, but not as tasty as the one at the original branch. I'll talk about the accompaniments below.

Lemon BBQ Large Fried Chicken Bento S$6.50
Taste: 7/10

Instead of the spicy powder, you can give the lemon BBQ sauce a try. Although I was hoping that the acidity from the lemon could be stronger, the sauce was sweet alright. Anyway, the rice could be fluffier, but it wasn't hard. The stir-fried long beans with beancurd cubes were just a tad too oily.

Breaded Oysters S$3.90
Taste: 4/10

The breaded oysters didn't really work for me as they pretty dry, not to mention that they weren't exactly fresh. The batter, however, was crispier than that coating the chicken. I could still finish my portion of two pieces, so nothing less than 4/10.

Elderflower Drink S$2.80
Taste: 6.5/10

Given that there wasn't a lot of ice cubes inside the cup, I had high hopes that the taste would be concentrated enough. Alas, it was pretty dilute, even though I could still detect the elderflower aroma.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6/10

I did a takeaway from the kiosk at Tiong Bahru Plaza. Pika's advice: You may want to take note that the branch at ION Orchard is more highly rated.
