A healthy plate of succulent grilled sea bass!

Has anyone stayed at JEN Singapore Orchard Gateway before? I haven't, but I dropped by the hotel once to have dinner at Makan@JEN located on the tenth floor. For the uninitiated, makan is a Malay or Indonesian word that means 'to eat'. Before COVID-19 hit the world, it used to offer self-service buffet and a la carte menu. My dining partner and I went for the latter.

My hunchbacked bear was eyeing on the satay.

Toasted Paprika and Herb Garlic Bread S$10.00
Taste: 6.5/10

The garlic bread was decent, but given the price tag, I was expecting more. Each piece was toasted well, having a crunchy texture without being dry. As a vegetarian appetiser, no butter was spread on the bread, but probably it could use margarine. I'd also love to have more of the smoky paprika powder sprinkled on it.

Malay Nasi Goreng S$19.00
Taste: 7/10

The nasi goreng (lit. fried rice) wasn't too shabby, though flavour wise not as exciting as its appearance. The chicken satay topped with peanut sauce was tender, while the breaded chicken drumettes were moist enough for my liking. Alas, the acar kuning (lit. yellow pickles) tasted one-dimensional. It was just mildly sweet and nothing else. Besides that, the chili wasn't that fiery.

Grilled Sea Bass Fillet with Tomato Sauce S$23.00
Taste: 8.5/10

I was impressed with the grilled sea bass, for it wasn't only fresh, but also delectably flaky and succulent. The tomato sauce was quite weak though, but given that the fish that was already seasoned with a bit of salt and black pepper, I didn't really need it anyway. The quinoa and cherry tomatoes, as well as the blanched vegetables, were prepared well. Pika's advice: If quinoa feels too healthy for you, go for fries or steamed rice instead.

Chocolate Lava Cake with Berries S$9.00
Taste: 7.5/10

I'm still embarking on the quest for the best lava cake. Served with strawberries and blueberries, the lava cake was topped with gold-dusted chocolate and castor sugar.

The cake itself was adequately fudgy, but the filling wasn't so runny. I also thought the chocolate could be richer.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

It seems like quite a lot of people were satisfied with the buffet at Makan@Jen. I wonder when it's going to return.
