SIN: Shake Shack
Can you finish the Singapore-exclusive pandan shake on your own?
I visited the branch at Jewel Changi Airport with a friend. Thankfully, the queue wasn't too long that evening.
The year 2019 saw not only A&W returning to Singapore, but also Shake Shack coming to our shores for the first time ever. The popular burger chain started out as a hot dog cart at Madison Square Park in New York, the USA in 2001. To date, the company operates over 250 outlets globally.

SmokeShack (Single) S$10.90
Taste: 8.5/10
Let's talk about the burger bun first. I found the potato bun to be pillowy enough for my liking, and it was lightly toasted to give it a bit of a contrastring crunch. The US Angus beef patty was succulent, accompanied by applewood-smoked bacon, melted cheese, chopped cherry peppers and ShackSauce - a mayo-based sauce that tasted sweet, sour and spicy. Pika's advice: Why not go for double patties? You just simply need to top up S$3.50.
'Shroom Burger S$10.80
Taste: 7.5/10
The vegetarian-friendly burger was pretty good, but not particularly exciting. Paired with lettuce leaves, tomato slices and ShackSauce, the breaded portobello mushroom was oozing with melted muenster and cheddar cheese, which I thought would be richer. Also, I've had juicier portobello mushroom elsewhere.
The nasi goreng (lit. fried rice) wasn't too shabby, though flavour wise not as exciting as its appearance. The chicken satay topped with peanut sauce was tender, while the breaded chicken drumettes were moist enough for my liking. Alas, the acar kuning (lit. yellow pickles) tasted one-dimensional. It was just mildly sweet and nothing else. Besides that, the chili wasn't that fiery.
Cheese Fries S$5.90
Taste: 8.5/10
I enjoyed the crinkle cut fries that were executed well. They were simultaneously soft and crispy without being greasy. Even with the addictive cheese sauce topping, which certainly didn't taste as artificial as the typical nacho cheese sauce around, they didn't end up being unappetisingly soggy.
Pandan Shake S$7.80
Taste: 5/10
My friend had already warned me to share the Singapore-exclusive beverage if I really wanted to give it a try. I was certainly grateful for his advice as the very thick vanilla frozen custard infused with pandan and coconut was too sweet for my liking. Topped with gula melaka (Malay brown sugar) crumble, it was actually quite fragrant, but I wouldn't be able to drink the entire thing on my own.
