SIN: ENG's Wantan Noodle

Lovely thick wantan noodle, though a tad oily!

Residents of Singapore, particularly those living in the east, would probably have heard about the rivalry between ENG's Wantan Noodle and ENG's Char Siew Wantan Mee, both of which are located along Tanjong Katong Road. The former was the original shop opened by the late Mr Ng Ba Eng in 2012 after relocating from Dunman Food Centre.

Unfortunately, things got messy in 2018. ENG's Wantan noodle was bought over by Lao Huo Tang, a soup chain company, while Mr Ng's two children opened ENG’s Char Siew Wantan Mee across the street.

Wanton Noodle (Small) S$4.50
Taste: 7/10

I enjoyed the thick homemade noodle that was made with only two ingredients: flour and egg. The springy noodle was mixed with some secret sauce that was aromatic, lard obviously being one of the star ingredients. To be frank, however, I'd love it to be slightly less oily. The barbecued pork wasn't particularly inspiring, but the few wantons hidden underneath the egg were pretty good, which I shall describe below. Pika's advice: If you like it spicy, don't forget to get some of the homemade chili sauce. However, beware that it's really hot.

Boiled Wanton (Small) S$3.50
Taste: 7.5/10

As the boiled wantons that came with the noodle weren't enough for me, I obviously had to do an a la carte order to get myself and my dining partner satisfied. Topped with chopped spring onions, the dumplings had silky skin with minced pork fillings made fragrant with sesame oil. They came with a bit of poached chye sim (Chinese mustard green).

Fried Wanton (Small) S$3.50
Taste: 6.5/10

While they were enjoyable, I wouldn't rave as much about the fried counterparts that came with a dollop of mayonnaise sitting on an iceberg lettuce chair. I was certainly thankful that they weren't greasy, but I've had crunchier ones elsewhere.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 5.5/10
Overall: 6/10

I'll definitely try Eng's Char Siew Wantan Mee and do a comparison someday.
