SIN: Don Don Donki [Savoury Takeaway]

Pretending to be in Japan with all the ready meals~

Don Quijote is a popular discount store chain in Japan. In Singapore, it's called Don Don Donki as the former is the name of a restaurant serving Spanish cuisine near Beauty World MRT station. Let's take a look at some of the savoury ready meals offered by the store housed inside The Central at Clarke Quay, which is the nearest from my house.

Omu Soba Set S$7.90
Taste: 7.5/10

For a store-bought meal, the yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried buckwheat noodle) wrapped with egg deserved such a score. It was quite delectable, kinda reminding me of the one I had when I first touched down in Hokkaido during winter. I also enjoyed the deep-fried chicken chunks even though they weren't crispy. There were also three takoyaki (Japanese octopus balls).

Una Jyu S$9.80
Taste: 7/10

Look at how nicely glazed the unagi (Japanese freshwater eel) was! I have to say that the sauce, typically made of soy sauce, sugar and mirin (a kind of Japanese sweet rice wine), was just a tad too sweet for my liking though. Nevertheless, the eel was pretty sizeable and more than decent in terms of taste. It was accompanied by rice, Japanese omelette and pickled ginger.

Salmon Don S$8.80
Taste: 7/10

The raw salmon slices were acceptably fresh. For the price, I wouldn't complain about their amount, though I'd certainly love to have a bit more of the vinegared rice. Included in the bowl were a packet of Japanese soy sauce and a packet of wasabi (Japanese horseradish). Though unnecessary, it was nice to see the plastic chrysanthemum flower as a decoration.

Salmon Terimayo Sushi S$6.00
Taste: 7/10

First of all, I'm not too sure why they call it terimayo (a blend of the words teriyaki and mayonnaise) because of the obvious absence of mayonnaise. Anyway, each piece came with charred sliced salmon glazed with sweet sauce and topped with sesame. They tasted pretty good.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10

I suppose I shall come up with another post on some of the sweet items offered by the store. Pika's advice: You may want to take advantage of the deals in the late evening just like in Japan, when the prices of the ready meals get slashed up to 50%.
