Let's 'makan' (lit. eat) at PeraMakan!

A play on the word Peranakan, Restaurant PeraMakan near Farrer Park MRT station takes diners on a culinary journey through fusion dishes born from the intermingling of Chinese, Malay and Indonesian cultures. The brand was founded in 2004 by Kathryn Ho, a fourth generation Nyonya of Malacca and Penang parentage.

I gave three dishes a try, as well as a dessert item at the end of the meal.

Ikan Garam Assam S$13.80
Taste: 8/10

The seabass cooked in a tantalising blend of sour and spicy gravy, which made use of candlenuts and tamarind among others, was the first dish to grace the table.

I enjoyed the substantial texture and the freshness of the fish, which was complemented with eggplant and ladyfinger slices as the accompanying vegetables.

Beef Rendang S$12.20
Taste: 8/10

Another recommended dish worth trying, the beef shin bathed in a medley of aromatic spices and coconut milk was really good to have with a bowl of rice.

Despite having a small fat content, the red meat was slow-cooked till tender. Having said that, I was hoping for a slightly spicier kick to elevate the culinary experience. Pika's advice: For something even more succulent and tender, you may want to opt for the Premium Beef Rendang, which is just S$3.00 more expensive.

Nyonya Chap Chye S$7.20
Taste: 7.5/10

Loosely translating as 'mixed vegetables', the braised vegetable stew was flavourful enough for my liking. It was a pretty delightful combination of cabbages, beancurd skin and black fungi cooked in bean sauce. I was anticipating more of the savoury sauce to drizzle over my rice though.

Sago Gula Melaka S$2.90
Taste: 7/10

Instead of loose sago balls, the dessert took the form of sago pudding ladled with velvety coconut milk and crowned with gula melaka (Malay brown sugar) sauce that wasn't prohibitively sweet. I like it that they added a pinch of salt to the coconut milk, but I've had sago with more enjoyable chewiness before.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

At the point of writing, there are two other outlets at Alexandra Retail Centre and Paya Lebar Quarter.
