TWN: EVA Air BR36 (Economy)
Porridge to warm the body and soul onboard!
Following a brief layover of less than two hours at Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan, it
was time to continue our journey with EVA Air BR36 bound for Toronto,
Canada. Please excuse the slightly odd colors in the photos below as I did my
best to reduce the extreme yellow hue using my rudimentary skills in Adobe Photoshop.
BR Meal #1
Apple Quinoa Salad - Taste: 8/10
While I usually don't have high expectations for Economy Class appetisers, I was pleasantly surprised by the quinoa salad. The juicy apple slices and raisins completed the earthiness of the quinoa, all tossed with zesty vinaigrette.
Fried Chicken with Green Tea and Potatoes - Taste: 7.5/10
Frankly speaking, I was intrigued by the name of the dish. However, what I thought would be an interesting twist on a classic favourite of pan-fried chicken didn't quite impart a prominent tea aroma. Having saiid that, the meat was tender and savoury enough for my liking. Besides that, the potatoes and steamed vegetables weren't soggy.
Wok-Fried Beef and Rice - Taste: 8.5/10
I enjoyed a similar dish on the previous flight, but the version prepared by Taoyuan International Airport catering was even better. The tender beef slices were stir-fried with superior soy sauce, offering a flavour that outshone the oolong tea-infused soy sauce earlier. Similarly, the steamed vegetables retained their sweetness while escaping the pitfall of sogginess.
Earl Grey Tea Cake - Taste: 7.5/10
Another treat infused with tea, the dessert certainly did not disappoint. The delicate citrusy bergamot notes from the tea complemented the moist cake well. The sweetness level was just right for me.
Fresh Fruits
A slice of apple and two orange slices were served.
Bread
The bread was fluffy alright and not dry.
Beverages
I had a glass of red wine that was pretty smooth, while my BFF had a glass of cranberry juice.
BR Meal #2 (Chinese)
Assorted Mushroom and Vegetable Salad - Taste: 7.5/10
The Chinese style salad, featuring three varieties of mushrooms and delicate carrot shred, offered a pretty refreshing burst of flavours. It was enhanced by the citrusy dressing and a hint of sesame oil.
Savoury Porridge with Shrimp, Pumpkin and Cabbage - Taste: 8/10
Such lovely, comforting porridge served as the main course of the Chinese option! The sweetness of the shrimps, as well as the tenderness of the pumpkin and cabbage, melded beautifully with the savoury porridge. Not mentioned in the name of the dish, the mushroom chunks added an extra layer of goodness to the dish.
BR Meal #2 (Western)
Jambalaya Meat and Penne Pasta - Taste: 8/10
While it might not have captured the essence of the original Creole dish, the combination of chicken and sausages generously coated in savoury brown sauce tantalised my taste buds. While the penne pasta was approaching the much coveted al dente texture, it was wonderfully paired with creamy white sauce. Once again, the steamed vegetables were done well.
Cheese with Crackers
Accompanying the packet of graham crackers was a single cheese wedge.
Fresh Fruits
The selection of fresh fruits was the same as that served during the first meal service. There was one apple slice and two orange slices.
Bread
The bread differed from the earlier serving. It wasn't as fluffy.
Beverages
Rather than opting for cold drinks, we tried both the hot coffee and hot tea as we didn't have them previously. It was a pity that the coffee lacked the robust flavour I was hoping for, but the tea was adequately aromatic.
Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7.5/10Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10
I wonder how's the gourmet offering like in the Business Class. Pika's advice: If you find yourself awake between the two meal services, you have the option to enjoy a mid-flight snack. During that particular flight, Ham with Cheese Croissant was served. I just took a bite from BFF's, and it tasted decent.
