SIN: Kith Café
The best espresso jelly I've ever had!
Who would've thought I'd discover the best espresso jelly right there? Exaggerating I'm not, for each spoonful layered truly bold flavour and jiggly texture perfectly. The rich bitterness of the espresso paired beautifully with vanilla ice cream, coconut cream and the caramel notes of gula melaka (Malay brown sugar).
Starting as a humble shop by the river at Robertson Quay in 2009. Kith Café has since expanded to no less than ten outlets across the island. The founder is a firm believer in feng shui (Chinese geomancy), seen in the cafe's logo with auspicious elements: 18 black and 18 yellow spaces arranged in an octagonal shape, symbolising prosperity and success.
My friend and I visited their Millenia Walk outlet.
Kith Volcanic Wings S$13.95
Taste: 7.5/10
For appetiser, we tried the spicy chicken wings served on a bed of baby spinach leaves. We opted for the dormant level of spiciness where the wings were coated in glossy, sticky sauce. They were pretty crunchy with enough heat to make me break a bit of sweat; a nice way to kick off the meal, I must say.
Kith Black Curry S$18.95
Taste: 8/10
As one of the signature dishes of the café, the chicken curry didn't disappoint. Made with a blend of spices that lent a smoky edge, the curry featured tender chicken, balancing depth and warmth without being overwhelmingly spicy. It was served with fragrant yellow rice, salad and a poached egg that could use a little more care.
Pesto e Panna S$19.95
Taste: 7/10
For the pasta dish that we tried, although the penne could be cooked a little bit longer to reach the perfect al dente texture, the cream sauce flavoured with a tinge of basil pesto was quite flavourful. Topped with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese, the pasta was tossed with tender chicken chunks and baby spinach leaves.
Kith Espresso Jelly S$6.95
