SIN: Siam Village

First time having such a frothy salted egg sauce!

Siam Village is a no-frills Thai eatery that used to operate at the food court of Midpoint Orchard, an old shopping mall smacked in the glitzy Orchard Road. However, it has since moved to 77 Jalan Wangi at Macpherson. Presumably due to a higher rental fee, it has increased the prices of the dishes.

No, my hunchbacked bear didn't intend to swim in that bowl of soup.

Red Tom Yum Seafood Soup (Regular) S$8.00
Taste: 7.5/10

Served piping hot, the hot and sour soup was decent. It wasn't the best with a rather low spicy level, but refreshing enough. Swimming inside were a few shrimps and fish slices, but there were quite a lot of squid rings and mushrooms. The ingredients were adequately fresh.

Salted Egg Chicken Drumlets S$9.90
Taste: 8/10

These days I find it rather hard to resist anything and everything that has got to do with salted eggs, thus I urged myself to order the five pieces of drumlets doused with frothy and chunky salted egg sauce. The white meat was juicy, while the sauce was potent enough for my taste buds.

Basil Minced Pork S$9.90
Taste: 6/10

Despite the name of the dish, the stir-fried minced pork didn't have many basil leaves, but there were enough chopped long beans that were pretty crunchy. I have to say that it was rather salty for my taste, even though it wasn't that bad when eaten with rice.

Mango Sticky Rice S$6.50
Taste: 4.5/10

The dinner didn't end on a high note as the dessert was passable. The quality of the sticky rice wasn't that good. Besides that, the mango was overripe, although it was rather sweet. Having said that, I actually enjoyed the thick coconut cream due to its consistency, as well as the sweet and salty balance.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 6.5/10

I wonder if the eatery will survive at its current location. Pika's advice: You may want to consider its signature dish of Steamed Sea Bass with Lemon Garlic Sauce, which is priced at S$29.00.
