SIN: Otto's Deli Fresh

Marriage between Russian beef stroganoff and Italian fettuccine~

Happy New Year! Here's hoping that 2019 will bring renewed joy and hope for everyone. To kickstart the year, I shall write about a place that's not only a delicatessen, but also a casual dining restaurant owned by a Swiss-born chef named Otto Weibel who used to whip up dishes at famous hotels in Singapore and HK.

Care to make a guess what came with the potato wedges?

Signature Hand Cut Fries S$8.00
Taste: 7.5/10

As I wasn't too interested in any of the appetiser dishes, I went for a side order of crispy wedges that were very lightly seasoned with salt. Instead of BBQ sauce or mentaiko (lit. pollock roe) mayonnaise, I chose salted egg yolk cream to go with the wedges. Having a rather dense texture, it wasn't as rich as expected.

Beef Stroganoff Fettuccine S$21.00
Taste: 8/10

Combining a classic Russian beef stew with an Italian element, the fusion pasta dish was mouth-watering. Topped with sour cream and parsley, the fettuccine was properly cooked to the point of being al dente. The beef chunks might not be that meaty, but they were tender.

Pan-Fried Barramundi S$22.00
Taste: 8.5/10

The pan-fried barramundi that came tangy cherry tomato chutney, as well as beurre noisette (lit. brown butter) with its faint nutty aroma, was delicious. The fish was fresh and juicy with crispy skin attached. It was accompanied by roasted baby potatoes and some greens.

Burnt Banana Waffle S$12.00
Taste: 8/10

Between forest berries and burnt banana, I opted for the latter to go with my crispy and buttery waffle for dessert. While the banana looked rather scary, the chargrilling process caramelised it to become sweeter and even more fragrant. On top of the waffle was a scoop of peanut butter gelato that was creamy without being cloying.
