SIN: A&W

Made a comeback in Singapore on its 100th anniversary!

Did you know that A&W was the first fast-food chain to arrive in Singapore in 1968? It left our shores in 2003, but it's finally back with the first outlet at Jewel Changi Airport. Thanks to my staycation at YOTELAir last month, I finally managed to dine there without having to join the usual snaking queue when it opened at 9.00am on a Sunday morning.

Mozza Burger Combo S$10.90

Whether it's a burger or a Coney dog that you're craving for, you'll get curly fries and a mug of root beer when you order a combo.

Mozza Burger (Set Menu)
Taste: 7.5/10

I wonder how many times have I had a burger for breakfast, but anyway, A&W's signature burger was quite enjoyable. There were two beef patties that were juicy enough, smacked together with two chicken crisps, a slice of melted cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickles in between lightly toasted semolina buns.

Curly Fries (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

I was glad that the curly fries were executed well, especially since they just came out of the fryer a while ago. Adequately coated with seasonings, they were as crispy as they should be. When it comes to curly fries, I really like those that spiral beautifully. Pika's advice: Fancy the loaded up version? Do go for the sinful Chicken Coney Cheese Fries or Beef Coney Cheese Fries priced at S$4.90.

Root Beer (Regular) (Set Menu)
Taste: 5/10

A&W is committed to serve freshly made root beer in each and every outlet. However, I was disappointed with the quality of the root beer that morning, especially since it wasn't that fizzy. While the mug was pre-chilled, the temperature wasn't low enough so it didn't come out as frosty as expected.

Golden Aroma Chicken S$3.20
Taste: 7.5/10

Hailing from Indonesia, the great-sounding chicken wasn't bad at all, though it could certainly be more aromatic and have bolder flavours to live up to its name. The chicken breast was pretty succulent without being too oily, while the breaded skin could be crunchier. Well, it did make me lick my finger in the end.

Waffle with Butter and Syrup S$7.50
Taste: 4.5/10

I was looking forward to a satisfying waffle, but it turned out to be a dud. First of all, it was served lukewarm. I purposely didn't want it to be topped with ice cream so that I could get the full texture of the waffle, but apparently it was rather dry and not crispy. There were two packets of salted butter, but not enough maple syrup.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Overall: 6/10

How many of you're aware that A&W stands for Allen and Wright? It started with Roy W. Allen setting up a roadside drink stand in 1919 before Frank Wright partnered with him in 1922 to eventually open their very first restaurant a year later in Sacramento, California in the USA.
