SIN: Traditional Sarawak Kolo Mee

'Kolo mee' with smoked duck better than the premium version!

I'm a sucker for kolo mee, a dry egg noodle dish hailing from Sarawak, Malaysia, which I very much prefer over other types like wanton noodle. Traditional Sarawak Kolo Mee has got two branches that are located pretty near each other at the point of writing: one at Fusionopolis that I visited, while the other is at Biopolis.

Premium Kolo Mee (Set Meal) S$9.90
Taste: 7.5/10

Each set meal comes with a choice of beverage for an additional S$1.00 on top of the a la carte price of the noodle. I typically go for wheat grass drink whenever it's available.

I enjoyed the springy noodle tossed in a light, yet savoury blend of soy sauce, shallot oil, lard and vinegar. Mixed with chili oil, each bite offered a gentle heat that made it even more satisfying. The toppings, however, could be better in terms of quality. While the two prawns were fresh enough and the deep-fried wanton was crunchy, the barbecued pork was rather dry. I slipped the bok choy (Chinese cabbage) and top shell slices into the accompanying soup that was delightfully sweet.

Black Pepper Smoked Duck Kolo Mee S$6.50
Taste: 8/10

I actually enjoyed the not-as-premium kolo mee even more. The smoked duck slices were the real star, for they were gently fatty, tender and well-marinated and, of course, adequately smoky. Sometimes less is more indeed.

Golden Fried Chicken Wing S$2.50
Taste: 8/10

Freshly deep-fried to a golden crisp, the chicken wing boasted a light, crackly exterior that gave way to juicy meat beneath. The secret blend of spices that adhered to the chicken wing was fragrant and moreish.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 8/10

They sell their chili oil in jars. Pika's advice: You may want to try their Curry Chicken Kolo Mee, which is another signature dish of the eatery that's priced at S$7.50.
