Huge spring chicken with rice and refreshing pickles!

During the holy month of Ramadan, each and every eatery in Brunei is forbidden to serve dine-in customers as part of the Islamic penal code of the country. As such, my BFF and I had to do takeaway a few times during our stay last June. Ayamku (lit. My Chicken) is a local fast-food chain.

Melon got to eat at the comfort of the hotel room.

Beef Burger B$1.80 (=S$1.80)

Taste: 4/10

The appearance of the beef burger didn't inspire confidence at all. True enough, the patty was kinda dry, even though it had quite an interesting taste. The lettuce leaves weren't that fresh.

Ayamku Lucky B$3.70 (=S$3.70)

Taste: 7/10

I found the fried chicken to be quite tasty, although the skin wasn't that crispy. The accompanying coleslaw featured crunchy cabbages and carrots in creamy buttermilk dressing, while the crinkled cut fries were so-so. I didn't like the bread as it was a tad stale.

Taste: 8/10

What I really enjoyed that afternoon was the deep-fried spring chicken that came with rice, as well as pickled cabbages, cucumbers and carrot bits that were refreshingly sour. The white meat was tender without being too oily, coated with a light and flavourful batter.

Pika's advice: If you look at the full menu, you can find things like fish fillet, fried noodle and spaghetti. You may want to give them a try. Prior to ordering from Ayamku, we went to the Royal Regalia Building. Don't miss it out when you're in town.
