SIN: Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa [Breakfast]

Quite a huge spread for breakfast, but...

I had the opportunity to stay at Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa (5*) before the COVID-19 pandemic kicked in. The hotel has been approved for staycation during Singapore's Phase 2 of Reopening, but it's definitely not offering self-service buffet breakfast for the time being. Let's have a look at the spread back then during my staycation on Labour Day.

Assorted Stuff #1

To begin with, I was grateful for the fresh salad and the not-so-salty cold cuts. The typical hot items shown in the photo above could be better though. The bacon strips were rather dry, while the mushrooms could definitely be juicier. What I enjoyed the most was the pork sausage that was adequately springy.

Assorted Stuff #2

From the looks of it, the idli (Indian steamed cake made of fermented rice and lentil batter) didn't seem fluffy, and I was right the moment I sank my teeth into it. I also wasn't particularly impressed by the nasi lemak (Malay rice dish cooked in coconut milk with pandan leaves) as it only had a very subtle hint of fragrance. It's certainly not common to see tteokbokki (Korean stir-fried rice cakes) served for breakfast, but anyway, they weren't bouncy enough. To wrap it up for this plate, the potato gratin was rather dehydrated.

Japanese Breakfast

Let's move on to the Land of the Rising Sun. It was a pleasant surprise to see natto (Japanese fermented soybeans) being served, and they tasted decent. The fish and the Japanese omelette slices weren't so moist though., while the miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup was perfectly edible.

Dim Sum

The best item on the plate was the salted egg yolk custard bun, which had warm and runny filling. The glutinous rice stuffed with chicken and mushrooms wasn't too bad, while the steamed pork dumpling and pork ribs were passable.

Omelette

There's nothing to rave about the made-to-order omelette either that I requested at the egg station, but it was moist alright with quite a generous amount of ingredients, such as ham, onions and bell peppers.

Cakes & Pastry

After being disappointed in many of the savoury dishes, the highly chocolatey muffin perked me up. The sponge cake was quite fluffy, even though it was rather pale-looking. The bottom part of the marble cake, which was actually pretty buttery, was a little bit underdone. As for the croissant and the banana danish, they weren't so crunchy.

Pancake

Alas, the pancake wasn't fluffy. In fact, it was a tad hard on the edges. I topped it with some honey and butter, while my friend had his with blueberry jam that also made an appearance in the photo above.

Tofu Pudding

I took comfort in the Chinese style tofu pudding that certainly didn't go wrong. Honestly, even though it wasn't too velvety, it was good enough with the unmistakable aroma of soybeans. In addition, the sugar syrup wasn't overly sweet.

Fruits & Yogurt

The fruits - watermelon, rockmelon, honeydew, pineapple and papaya - were cut into cubes. The sweetest and juiciest were the watermelons, while the least juicy were the pineapples. The papaya cubes were overripe. Anyway, I was quite happy when I saw Meiji yogurt with nata de coco.

Beverages

From the coffee machine, I dispensed out cappuccino into my mug. It tasted decent without having way too much milk. The cranberry juice and orange juice weren't overly sweet.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 5.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Overall: 7/10

Granted, the restaurant was trying to please everyone by whipping up multi-cultural dishes, but frankly speaking, some dishes left much to be desired. Overall, I wouldn't recommend the buffet breakfast that I had the other day, but I'm not sure how the current a la carte buffet breakfast is like. Pika's advice: Having said that, don't let it deter you from dining at Shutters, the restaurant where breakfast is served.
