SIN: Club Lounge @ InterContinental Singapore [Evening Canapés]

Where Shirley Temple beat Tom Collins~

Let's continue to look at the food and drinks served at the Club Lounge at InterContinental Singapore (5*). Besides offering afternoon tea from 3.00pm to 5.00pm, the lounge also dishes out canapés with alcoholic beverages daily from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. After the so-so afternoon tea, I was certainly hoping that the evening treat would make up for that.

That was probably the first time I had evening canapés served on a tiered stand.

Assorted Snacks & Prosecco

At the beginning, assorted nuts and crackers were served along with my first choice of drink. Truth be told, I actually had three servings of the crisp, refreshing Prosecco as I didn't want to decline the offer from the bubbly server who was so eager to top up my glass.

Mushroom Velouté

Here's the thing: the mushroom velouté turned out to be the best savoury item that evening. With lots of chopped mushrooms, it certainly didn't fail in the thickness department. In fact, I requested for more once I was done with the rest.

Upper Tier

Disappointment set in the moment I sank my teeth on the vegetable spring roll served in a shot glass with chili sauce at the bottom. It was rather oily without being crispy at all. The Indian butter chicken on crostini wasn't too shabby, but it could be richer.

Middle Tier

The cold soba (Japanese buckwheat noodle), which came with a bit of tofu and mushrooms, failed to impress me. In particular, the noodle was rather floury. The crab cakes topped with kaffir lime tartar sauce, on the other hand, were alright.

Lower Tier

Thankfully, the sweets fared better, even though they weren't mind-blowing. The signature carrot cake topped with ladybug chocolate was adequately moist, but there was too much cream cheese frosting. The lemon meringue tartlets could have bolder flavours, while the milk chocolate pralines were crunchy and not overly sweet.

Cocktail of the Day

Prior to visiting the lounge, I'd actually never tried Tom Collins before. The rather simple cocktail made of gin, lemon juice, carbonated water and sugar only got the taste buds excited a little bit. I'd prefer it to be more lemony.

Mocktail of the Day

The Shirley Temple, a non-alcoholic drink made of ginger ale and grenadine, was pretty delightful. I enjoyed its fragrance and fizziness that helped to sober me up a bit, not that I got wasted though. It'd be even better if it were slightly less sweet.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6/10
Ambience: 9/10
Service: 9/10
Overall: 8/10

You won't miss anything for skipping the snacks, but don't miss the free-flow alcoholic beverages if you're a drinker. Pika's advice: Bringing your little one(s) into the lounge in the evening? You can request for Kid's Candy Basket filled with Pocky sticks, gummy bears, jelly beans and marshmallows.
