SIN: New Ubin Seafood

Serving delicious 'mee goreng' since the 1980s!

New Ubin Seafood gets its name from Pulau Ubin, a northeastern island of Singapore, where it used to operate in the past before moving to the mainland in 1992. At the point of writing, there are three branches. I visited the one within Ramada by Wyndham Singapore at Zhongshan Park (4*) during my staycation there for a quick lunch.

I've only been to Pulau Ubin once in my life when I was still a secondary school student for Outward Bound Singapore.

Traditional Satay (Chicken) S$6.50
Taste: 8/10

My BFF and I decided to go for two appetisers, one of which was the chicken satay that came in five sticks with a bowl of peanut sauce, as well as fresh cucumbers and red onions. The tender and juicy chicken chunks were grilled well. I also found the peanut sauce to be nice as it was pretty thick and a little bit chunky, on top of the fact that it wasn't overly sweet. Anyway, the restaurant also serves the pork and mutton counterparts.

Crispy Pork Jowl S$14.00
Taste: 7.5/10

Said to be one of the award-winning dishes, the pork jowl appetiser was good, but they could tone down on the salt just a little bit. Served on the plate were 125 g of the fleshy lower part of the pork cheek. Being adequately fatty, each piece was quite crispy around the edges, going well with the accompanying brown sugar sauce mixed with a bit of miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) paste.

Punggol Style Mee Goreng (Small) S$15.00
Taste: 8/10

The only main course that we ordered was the visually inviting stir-fried noodle, which turned out to be tasty. Cooked with enough eggs and fish cakes, it was spicy enough for my liking. The two prawns, however, weren't as springy and sweet as expected. When asked if we'd like to have some chili, we requested for belacan (lit. shrimp paste) chili (not shown), which unfortunately wasn't that good as it was rather salty and not that fragrant.

Housemade Orh Nee S$8.00
Taste: 7/10

It'd been a long while since I last had orh nee (Teochew sweet yam paste cooked with rendered pork lard), not counting the mooncake that I had from Crowne Plaza Changi Airport in September this year. It came a few pumpkin cubes and ginkgo nuts. I didn't expect that the coconut milk would be served separately.

I enjoyed the thick consistency of the coconut milk. However, no amount of mixing could make the dessert as velvety as how I'd love it to be.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

That Saturday, the restaurant was pretty crowded during lunch hours. Pika's advice: Take note that lunch sets for 3 to 10 pax are available only on weekdays.
