UGA: The Lawns Wild Game and Barbecue Restaurant

Trying kudu and crocodile meat for the first time ever!

Located close to Uganda Golf Club in Kampala, The Lawns Wild Game and Barbecue Restaurant considers itself to be a fine dining restaurant that serves international cuisine. Unusual ingredients that you can find there include crocodile, kudu, blesbok, springbok and wildebeest meat.

I was praying hard that I'd be able to consume some of those stuff.

French Onion Soup UGX 15,000 (~S$5.45)
Taste: 7.5/10

It was drizzling that evening, so I decided to start with a bowl of French onion soup topped with a slice of cheesy bread to warm the body and soul. It was good, but I've had much sweeter caramelised onions elsewhere. The homemade garlic bread slices were crunchy.

Crocodile in Garlic Wine Sauce UGX 44,000 (~S$16.05)
Taste: 8/10

Crocodile meat can be found in Singapore, though it's getting even rarer these days. My first try was in the form of boneless cubes cooked in creamy sauce that was delightful without being cloying. Served with sautéed spinach, cherry tomatoes and rice, the meat tasted somewhat like chicken meat with a tinge of fishy flavour.

Smoked Kudu Steak UGX 36,000 (~S$21.15)
Taste: 6/10

Kudu is a species of antelope endemic to Africa. Weighing 180 g, the slab of smoked kudu fillet infused with rosemary wasn't that tender, although it was marinated well. To me, the meat tasted like venison. I didn't like the peppercorn sauce as it tasted bitter. The mashed potatoes were milky, but not so velvety.

The Lawns Banoffee Sundae UGX 15,000 (~S$5.45)
Taste: 8/10

Despite the chilly weather, I went for the restaurant's signature banoffee sundae for dessert. Without doubt, I enjoyed the vanilla ice cream topped with butterscotch sauce, crushed biscuits, toasted almonds and whipped cream. Even though the description on the menu says caramelised bananas, they weren't done so enough.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Would you be interested to try some game meat? Pika's advice: Should you wish to splurge on Whole Crocodile Tail, which is priced at UGX 250,000 (~S$91.15), you need to pre-order at least 24 hours in advance as it needs to be marinated overnight with herbs and spices before being roasted.
