UGA: St. Anthony's Restaurant

Where locals go for 'luwombo' and 'matooke'!

There doesn't seem to be many big restaurants, if at all, serving authentic local cuisine in Kampala, Uganda. I recall having a hard time finding one when doing my research before the trip. Thankfully, I came across St. Anthony's Restaurant from Google Maps, one such eatery that doesn't actually have written menu.

Luwombo Set UGX 27,000 (~S$9.80)
Taste: 7.5/10

It's said that luwombo, a local dish of meat steamed in banana leaves, has been a royal dish since 1887. At St. Anthony's Restaurant, a set is inclusive of a choice of carbohydrate.

Chicken Luwombo (Set Menu)
Taste: 8/10

Opening the banana leaves revealed a medium-sized chicken steamed in its own jus with chopped onions and groundnuts. It was tasty, although the white meat could be tenderer. Pika's advice: Instead of chicken, you may opt for beef or lamb luwombo.

Matooke & Greens (Set Menu)
Taste: 7/10

I'm not too sure about the other carbohydrates available, but I was set to try matooke made of East African Highland bananas that were mashed and subsequently steamed. Though it didn't have a particularly unique taste, I found the gummy texture to be enjoyable. It was served with some steamed greens that tasted somewhat like papaya leaves.

Passion Fruit Juice UGX 7,000 (~S$2.55)

I had a glass of passion fruit juice, which turned out to be made from concentrate.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 5/10
Service: 6/10
Overall: 6/10

I wonder what other dishes are available at the restaurant.
