Virgin experience with candied pufferfish!

Keyaki is a high-end Japanese restaurant situated at the fourth floor of Pan Pacific Singapore. Surrounded by a serene Japanese garden that's by no means trivial in terms of size, as well as a pond full of koi (Japanese carp), it offers an elegant ambience with Japanese and Western-style private dining rooms.

I went there for lunch with an old friend of mine.

Fugu Mirinboshi S$18.00
Taste: 7.5/10

How many of you've had the experience of eating the poisonous pufferfish? So far, I've only had the candied version. I found Keyaki's version to be good enough as each piece was nicely coated with sweet sake (Japanese rice wine). A dollop of mayonnaise topped with furikake (Japanese mixed dried seasonings) was provided as a complement.

Appetiser (Set Menu)

As we ordered a lunch set each, we had a small plate of pickled lotus roots topped with a bit of furikake (Japanese mixed dried seasonings).

Gyuniku Shogayaki Tempura Gozen S$59.00
Taste: 8/10

A fan of beef, my BFF ordered the set featuring stir-fried thinly-sliced beef imported from the USA with ginger. Accompanied by a small serving of mustard, the beef slices were really springy, but I felt that they could be more flavourful. The tempura (Japanese battered and deep-fried assortments) were crunchy without being greasy. Other dishes included sweet spot prawns, tofu, miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup and pickles.

Negitoro Don Kuruma Ebi Shioyaki Gozen S$62.00
Taste: 8.5/10

My choice of lunch set might look less elaborate, but I enjoyed the vinegared rice with chopped tuna belly topped with spring onions and a quail egg. Another highlight would be the two grilled tiger prawns that were naturally sweet, but not as highly succulent as I thought they'd be. Other dishes included vinegared raw seafood, chawanmushi (Japanese egg custard), miso soup and pickles.

Fruits & Green Tea (Set Menu)

Once our trays had been cleared, we were served some refreshing fruits and hot green tea. I'd certainly love to have more of the out-of-the-world sweet muskmelon, but the watermelon slices and grapes were luscious too. The drink, however, was rather thin.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8.5/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 8.5/10

The food was good, but pricey for sure. Pika's advice: You may want to consider the customisable Weekend Set Brunch that's priced at S$75.00. For an additional S$60.00, you can have free-flow alcoholic drinks.
