SIN: SONS {CLOSED}
Black baccala cakes with tasty sea urchin sauce!
Happy belated birthday, Melon! Her birthday is actually on 3 October, but I simply didn't have the time to go out for a meal last Thursday as there were lots of work to clear. SONS is a trendy trattoria-cum-bar housed inside one of the heritage-chic shophouses of Nankin Row in Chinatown.
Take note that the restaurant adopts a cashless policy. Major credit cards and Alipay are accepted as payment methods.
UPDATE (12/10/2021): The eatery has closed down.

Baccala Cakes with Sea Urchin Sabayon S$18.00
Taste: 8.5/10
I'm not sure about you, but if you know Kamen Rider, doesn't the appearance of the dish remind you of him?
Possibly the most interesting sounding appetiser in the list, the crunchy salt cod cakes appeared black due to the use of squid ink. They went well with the airy sea urchin sauce that was flavourful without being cloying.
Kale and Nduja Ravioli with Capers and Garlic Butter S$22.00
Taste: 8/10
For the uninitiated, nduja is a type of spicy pork spread. Topped with crispy roasted kale, the dish that made use of striped ravioli looked pretty.
While I'd prefer the filling to be slightly less runny, it was quite tasty. The chopped capers gave it a nice tang.
Duck Leg Confit with Cannellini and Cherry Tomatoes S$26.00
Taste: 8.5/10
Not only one, but two duck legs were presented on the plate, making it a value-for-money main course. The meat was succulent with the skin being truly crispy. I'd appreciate them to be fried with a bit of salt though. The cherry tomatoes were juicy and the white kidney beans were cooked well.
Mango and Calamansi Cheesecake S$12.00
Taste: 7.5/10
For Melon's birthday cake, I decided to order the dome-shaped cheesecake that was decorated with thin chocolate pieces and castor sugar.
The cake was nicely infused with calamansi that gave it a bit of a sour kick, although the cream cheese wasn't as rich as expected. The mango layer could be sweeter and more aromatic.
Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 6/10
Overall: 7.5/10
Service was rather slow even though there weren't lots of diners. Pika's advice: If you happen to be around for lunch, you can spend below S$20.00.
