SIN: Alter Ego

Eat clean or indulge dirty?

"Surrender or control? Embrace your alter ego." The interesting dining concept at Esplanade Mall not only serves healthy poke bowls from its opening time till 9.00pm, but also whips up sinful dishes from 3.00pm onwards daily. I was there for lunch, deciding to try the poke bowls.

The eatery also serves brunch items from 11.00am to 3.00pm on weekends.

Wasabi Yuzu Dragon Poke Bowl S$17.00
Taste: 8.5/10

Each of the poke bowls served by Alter Ego includes vinegared Japanese rice, honey pineapple cubes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, seaweed, sesame seeds and furikake (Japanese mixed dried seasonings). I ordered the one with fresh salmon marinated with wasabi (Japanese horseradish) and yuzu (a species of aromatic Asiatic citron), avocado with lime, smoked almonds, pickled mushrooms and crispy bits. It was delicious and refreshingly tangy.

The Gochujang Effect Poke Bowl S$17.00
Taste: 8/10

My BFF ordered something rather similar in terms of topping, but Korean style. Instead of smoked almonds, there were kale chips. The fresh salmon was marinated with gochujang (Korean paste of red chili, glutinous rice, fermented soybeans and salt) aioli, which I thought could be stronger. Pika's advice: You may want to swap the vinegared Japanese rice for brown rice for a healthier alternative.

Floosey Fruity Crumble S$11.00
Taste: 8.5/10

After finishing the healthy poke bowls, we decided to share a less healthy dessert dish featuring strawberries, raspberries and blueberries topped with crunchy, buttery crumbs that were served warm. To top it off, maple syrup was drizzled all over that gave the dish a heady aroma.

Millionaire Malt S$10.00
Taste: 7.5/10

My BFF ordered one of the sinful thick milkshakes. The malt drink topped with whipped cream, shaved chocolate, cocoa powder, Milo sauce and Maltesers was no doubt rich and indulgent. However, given the sweet toppings, the drink itself could actually use no sugar or perhaps just a little bit of it.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

I should try to indulge in the sinful savoury dishes next time. Anyway, Alter Ego serves different types of Sangria by the jug.
