CAN: Phnom Penh Restaurant

Delicious butter beer... I mean butter beef!

Phnom Penh Restaurant is a renowned Cambodian-Vietnamese eatery in Vancouver, Canada that has bagged multiple recognitions from the annual Golden Plates awards. The restaurant even gives a heads-up in the website to "expect a long wait, followed by a fantastic meal".

My BFF and I had a hard time deciding on what to order from the huge menu.

BBQ Lemongrass Pork Chop on Rice C$10.25 (~S$10.65)
Taste: 8.5/10

The pork chop topped with chopped spring onions was as authentic as it could get. It wasn't only tender, but also full of smoky aroma that was highly inviting. The accompanying dip made of fish sauce and chili (not shown) was rather thin though. Besides the generous amount of rice, there were fresh vegetables served on the side.

Rice Noodle with Two Kinds of Meatballs C$10.95 (~S$11.35)
Taste: 8.5/10

The hearty rice noodle soup came with beansprouts (shown in the first photo above) that'd been blanched a little bit to remove the raw taste. We'd wanted to order three kinds of homemade meatballs: beef balls, squid balls and prawn balls, but they ran out of the latter. The beef balls were meaty enough, but I prefer the sweet and bouncy squid balls.

Marinated Butter Beef C$16.50 (~S$17.15)
Taste: 9/10

One of the must-try dishes of the restaurant is the thinly sliced rare beef marinated in a special kind of sauce. True enough, I saw almost every table ordering that. Topped with lots of fried garlic bits and coriander leaves, the enjoyably tender and moist red meat that'd soaked up the savoury sauce was really addictive.

Nine Layer Cake C$6.25 (~S$6.50)
Taste: 8/10

The Vietnamese name of the traditional steamed cake made of tapioca starch, rice flour, mung beans, coconut milk, pandan leaves and sugar is banh da lon, which literally means 'pig skin cake'. Served warm, the colourful cake was soft, a little bit chewy and adequately rich.

Jasmine Tea FOC

The complimentary jasmine tea was truly fragrant and slightly bitter just the way I like it. I couldn't stop topping up my cup with it.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

We waited for about half an hour before we could get a round table shared with two other duos. Pika's advice: You may also want to try the other must-try dish, which is Phnom Penh Deep-Fried Chicken Wings. The small portion costs C$10.95 (~S$11.35), while the large on costs C$15.95 (~S$16.55)
